what chicago's reading

why

We should read to give our souls a chance to luxuriate – Henry Miller

I moved to Chicago two years ago. When I started riding the CTA, I was happily astounded by all the reading I witnessed. In a society which tells us that no one is reading and print is dead, there are an awful lot of readers out there.

We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are – Anais Nin

There was a man on the train who – every morning – I saw read stories to his Cheerio munching son. Sometimes I spotted people reading favorite books of mine and I wanted to reach out and share with them, or just hug them. One day, a man started a friendly conversation with me about a book I was reading. We passed reading recommendations back and forth. These are magical reading moments.

No two persons ever read the same book – Edmund Wilson

Then a professor asked me to look at the moon a couple times a week. It is amazing what can happen when you pause and reflect on a small part of the world around you. This site – which is a collection of who is reading what – is my way of documenting that reading is alive and well. I am pausing to celebrate the written word.

Read in order to live – Henry Fielding
